이곳이 누구네 숲인지 나는 알 듯도 하다

그러나 그는 마을에 있어 

내가 여기에 와 멈추어 서서 

눈 덮여가는 숲을 보는 것을 알지 못하리라. 

내 작은 조랑말은 뭔가 이상해하네

가까운 곳에 농가도 없고 

얼어붙은 호수뿐인 깊은 숲에 와 멈추어 선 것을. 

일년 중 가장 그윽히 어두운 날 저녁에

조랑말은 방울을 한번 짤랑거려본다 

뭔가 잘못된 것이 아니냐는 듯이 

그 외의 다른 소리라고는

숲을 쓸어가는 부드러운 바람과 하늘거리는 눈송이뿐. 

숲은 아름답고 저물었고 깊은데

그러나 나는 지켜야 할 약속이 있어 

잠들기 전에 가야 할 먼 길이 있다
